Chapter Seven
When Mrs. OâBrien and Mr. Sayers returned, he placed her bags on the extra bed. âItâs a good idea for all of you to stick together,â the conductor said. His attention riveted on Doro. âKeeping passengers safe is my top priority.â
The veiled warning was not lost on Doro, who gathered her composure before responding. âThatâs good to know.â
Although Sayers looked as if he wanted to issue another warning, he nodded. âMore rain is coming, but it shouldnât delay the repair crewâs arrival.â
âAre they coming from Colorado Springs or Dodge City?â Gramma Rose asked.
âIâm not sure, maâam,â he replied. âNow, if youâll excuse me, I want to check onâuhâthe professor and grab some food.â
After the door closed behind Sayers, Rose gestured to the seat beside her. âMake yourself comfortable, Mrs. OâBrien. Do you enjoy whist?â
âI do,â the other woman replied.
Before her grandmother asked the two girls to join the game, Doro suggested a walk through the train. Her friend readily agreed. As soon as they left the compartment, Doro paused. âWeâre lucky Mrs. OâBrien joined us. Although I donât mind playing whist occasionally, I donât want to spend all afternoon doing it.â
âMe, either,â Aggie said with a grin. âYour grandmother looked like she wanted to issue another warning, but thought better of it. Probably because she didnât want Mrs. OâBrien more upset.â
âProbably so,â Doro agreed. âThe dining car, with its small kitchen, is the only one ahead of us. Then, there are only three more cars after this one: the regular compartment, the crew sleeping car, and the caboose, so we could amble along and see whatâs happening. Mr. Sayers was headed the opposite way, so we should have a little time.â
A grin tugged at the corner of Aggieâs mouth. âTo ask questions.â
âIf we cross paths with people, Iâm sure weâll chat.â Doro could not keep a lilt of humor from her voice. Aggie knew her well. A walk was never just a walk when a crime had occurred.
âIâm sure we will,â Aggie agreed with a trace of asperity.
The friends went through the rest of their car without seeing anyone. When they exited, both looked out the gangway window. Rain made it impossible to see very far. âMr. Sayers didnât think the repairmen would be delayed, but I wonder if thatâs wishful thinking.â
âEven if they arrive in a timely manner, they canât replace the coupler in this downpour,â Aggie observed.
âNo, they canât. But letâs go on, so we donât run into Sayers while weâre out-and-about.â
The next carriage also contained compartments. As they passed the doors, the two friends heard voices but nothing related to the murder. Since the sleeper car for crew members followed, they moved along quietly. The waiters had planned to get much needed rest, so the friends continued to the caboose, which was empty.
âI donât think we should snoop in there,â Aggie said as soon as Doro opened the door. âItâs private. The sign says so.â
Doro rolled her eyes. âThe men are a few cars away and outside, so this is our best chance to see if thereâs any evidence here.
